Hong is truly a master of the pipa, the pear-shaped lute. And not just the delicate lady-like aspects. She can dig as deep into the instrument as the next heavy metal guitarist. She also has the ears of a genius. How else could someone so steeped in one tradition make such synchronistic improvisations with sitarists and shakuhachi players alike?
