Brian Skutle's Csound Podcast

Brian Skutle's Csound Podcast

This podcast is dedicated to my delvings into Csound I made in college, as well as recent explorations in reacquainting myself with the program. All of the pieces currently available for listen here were projects done for class, so some may not be as complex as others, but in returning to the program for a project I'm currently working on, I hope to go further into my study and work with the program. These pieces were created in 1999 and 2000 as I was studying Csound with Dr. Robert Scott Thompson at Georgia State University.

Assembling the Commadore 64

Assembling the Commadore 64

This piece was written for the 6 Hour Contest in Dr. B's Csound class at Berklee. The piece was put together in six hours using sounds derived from the Csound Catalog. I used Peak to chop up samples, which I put in Reason's samplers. I sequenced it in Logic. I spent the first five and a half hours going back and forth between editing, rendering, and chopping instruments and composing. The last half hour was mixing.

Have you wondered if there is another you out there? Somewhere? Sitting in the same chair, reading the same blog post, wearing the same clothes and thinking the same thoughts? Well, Brian Greene says there must be one. Or two. Or lots and lots and lots and lots and… Why? You ask, well listen to Greene’s argument in this week’s podcast.

We are still furiously working on Season 5, so while you wait we bring you today’s podcast of a conversation between Robert Krulwich and Brian">http://www.columbia.edu/cu/physics/fac-bios/Greene/faculty.html">Brian Greene, physics and mathematics professor and director of the Institute of Strings, Cosmology, and Astroparticle Physics at Columbia University. Zoe Keating is the cellist from our live show, War">http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/episodes/2008/03/07">War of the Worlds. She used to play with the band Rasputina and now solos and records music for films, such as horror flick, “The Devil’s Chair” (coming out September 30th) and a PBS documentary on Lincoln’s assassination. Her music process reminded us a bit of ours (looping and layering sound) so she and Jad sat down together in San Francisco to talk shop and listen to some unreleased stuff off her new album (as of yet untitled). In this podcast, you’ll hear Jad and Zoe discuss the physics (if not metaphysics) of looping sound and how to use a 17th century instrument to make avant-garde electronic music:
